Titans 0-5: Patience With Cam Ward Is Right. Patience With the Protection Is Not
Sunday was rock bottom, and nobody in two-tone blue needs a recap to feel it. Houston walked into Nissan Stadium and left with a 26-3 win, and the Titans are 0-5 for the first time since the 2009 team lost its first six.
Here's our Take: Robert Saleh is right to keep Cam Ward under center. He's wrong if he thinks patience alone fixes what's happening in front of him.
Look at the game. The Titans opened with a 58-yard drive and a Joey Slye field goal. After that, per The Tennessean, they gained 129 total yards over their final eight drives. Ward went 23-of-36 for 170 yards, no touchdowns and one interception, and he was sacked four times. The pick came as he was hit while he threw. You can't grade a young quarterback fairly when he's hitting the turf that often.
Saleh said the Titans will give Ward "every opportunity to be successful this year." Good. Benching the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft five games into a lost start would teach him nothing except how to stand on a sideline. Ward said it himself after the game: "I am not a loser. The record may say that, that we are that right now."
But "every opportunity" has to mean more than reps. It means fixing the protection plan, quicker answers in the passing game, and a run game that keeps third downs manageable. It means not putting the ball on the ground. A Tyjae Spears fumble and the Ward interception came back to back in the first half and turned a close game into a long day.
The Titans have now lost 11 straight in the AFC South. That's the bigger alarm than 0-5. Division games are where rebuilds prove they're real.
Saleh says "this organization and team will have its day in the sun." We want to believe him. The way to earn that belief over the next month is simple: keep Ward upright, let him play fast, and show us a plan that looks different from Sunday's. Patience with the quarterback, urgency everywhere else.
