Titans Reportedly Trade Jeffery Simmons to the Bears for Two First-Round Picks, and the Rebuild Is Here
Our Take: This is the moment the Titans stopped pretending. If the reported trade of Jeffery Simmons holds, moving the best player on the roster and the heartbeat of the defense hurts. But at 1-6, with a young core still being built, two first-round picks for a 29-year-old defensive tackle is the kind of return that can reset a franchise. Tennessee sold high, and that was the right call.
The deal (reported). Tom Pelissero of NFL Network first reported Thursday morning that the Chicago Bears were trading for Simmons. Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport then laid out the terms, and Pelissero's updated report matched them. Per those reports, Chicago gets Simmons and a 2028 fifth-round pick. Tennessee gets the Bears' 2027 first-round pick, their 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick. As of late Thursday morning, neither team had announced the trade, and it was not yet on the Titans' official transactions page.
Why it stings. Simmons isn't just a good player. He's an All-Pro in the middle of his prime, and the Titans signed him to a three-year, $105.8 million extension before this season. On Wednesday he told reporters he hadn't heard anything from his agent or the team about a trade and was focused on being "where my feet at." A day later, he's headed to Chicago.
Why it makes sense. Tennessee is 1-6 after Sunday's 27-24 loss to Cleveland, and Chicago is 5-2. Contenders pay a premium at the deadline, and the Bears just paid one. That gives the Titans two extra first-rounders over the next two drafts on top of their own, plus a fourth. A front office building around young players needs exactly that kind of draft capital. Holding on to an expensive veteran tackle through a lost season doesn't make the team better in 2027.
What's next. The defensive front has to be rebuilt in a hurry. The Titans claimed Jonah Laulu off waivers this week, and he and the rest of the interior group now get a lot more snaps. Tennessee plays at Cincinnati on Sunday at noon CT on CBS, and that will be the first look at life after Simmons. The real verdict on this trade comes in the 2027 and 2028 drafts. If those Chicago picks turn into foundation players, today will be remembered as the day the rebuild truly started.
